About Janet Evanovich
Janet Evanovich is best known for her Stephanie Plum Series, a fictional account of a female bounty hunter who turns to bounty hunting after she loses her job. There are fifteen novels in this series that have made the New York Times Best Seller List. Janet Evanovich writes under the pen names of Steffie Hall as well and has been a published novelist since 1987.
Although she is best known for the Stephanie Plum series, she began her career writing romance novels under the name of Steffie Hall. She has written both contemporary romance novels as well as contemporary suspense romance novels under this name. She is 66 years old and lives in South River, New Jersey.
Although she attended Rutgers University to study art, like many romance novelists, she began her writing career while she was at home raising her children. She took lessons in improv acting in order to make her dialogue for her novels more authentic. She submitted several romance novels for publication, receiving rejection letters, until she sold a manuscript for $2000. This was entitled “Hero At Large.” She began to write under her own name for Bantam in the Loveswept line shortly afterwards and became known not only for her extraordinary dialogue, but also the humor that laced her books. She completed 12 romance novels before realizing that she was more interested in action than writing romance sex scenes and began to write a series of adventure novels at that time. This was the beginning of the Stephanie Plum series.
Romance novels are traditionally written in the third person point of view. With the Stephanie Plum series, she changed the point of view to first person narrative. She focused these novels on the female protagonist with strong secondary characters and found literary fame. She is said to have been inspired by the Robert DeNiro film “Midnight Run” for this popular series. The series is sent in Trenton, New Jersey.
Her first Stephanie Plum novel was received well by critics and all subsequent novels debuted at the number one spot on the New York Times Best Seller List. One of her books “One For The Money” was sold to Columbia Tristar for one million dollars, although no film has yet been made of this book.
Evanovich lives in New Hampshire as well as Florida and employs her children as well as son in law in her business, Evanovich, Inc. She professes to work eight hours a day five days a week on her novels and also works for about four hours on the weekends. A self- confessed outline writer, Janet creates a general outline of the book before she begins writing.
Those who are interested in reading the work of Janet Evanovich can start with her first novel, “Hero At Large” which is still in publication and is published under the name of Steffie Hall. Those who want to read her Stephanie Plum series should begin with “One For The Money” which was published in 1994. As of to date, she has written 19 books in this series, with the latest, “Finger Lickin Fifteen the most recently published.
